The Story of the Crooked Swimming Pool at The Alena Resort

While the Alena resort has been known to bring the complete serenity to their customer and provide full resort service for the past 3.5 years, what most people has when they heard of The Alena Resort is the “crooked” swimming pool.

The swimming pool is 13 meters long and 6 meters wide laying in the center of the resort. Making it the most eyecatching view from the moment guest arrive at the resort. Behind this amazing view and clarity there’s a little bit story to it that we will tell you here.

Mrs. Dewi, the owner told us that when they bought the land on 2014, there’s already aJamblang Tree (Syzygium cumini)standing tall and strong in the center of the land for decades. The whole resort was built following the land structure, thus it’s only natural when the resort was designed surounding the Jamblang Tree. Deluxe room was built on the southern part of the land, spa’s at the east part, Suite’s room building is by the north and entrance as well as lobby is at the west part of the land. Main pool has already been established to be built in the center of the resort, but, there’s a strong and tall Jamblang tree in there.

Owner and architect is trying very natural with the resort, and they think it would be not in their option to cut the tree down. The tree was standing so strong and magical and it felt like the tree is the owner of the land. Came into consideration that Animism – a belief that objects, places, and creatures all posses spiritual essence- is a big part of balinese culture and lifestyle. Moreover, it’s in Ubud, where people are so invested in cultural life more than any area in the island.

They digged deep into their creativity and come up with several ideas, until they finally decided they’d conditioned the pool to follow the tree. They come up with the idea that the pool will be crooked to 45Oat the tip, so that the pool can be built without demolishing the tree.

Guest has been loving the pool so much that user Krisztina B on tripadvisor wrote in Swedish ‘Poolen är lagom stor och med perfekt temperatur, det var alltid lugnt att vistas där och koppla av. Maten var verkligen utsökt, vi har beställt olika rätter och alla var mycket vällagade och vackert upplagda.’ which in English translates aspool is just large and with perfect temperature, it was always quiet to stay there in relax. While user Hamood_89 on Booking.com left ‘fantastic pool view’ on their 9.2 rated review.

Three and a half years later, the crooked pool is beatiful in emerald green water reflecting the sunshine of Ubud warmness. Hugging the Jamblang tree giving it the shade so the sun won’t burn those swimming humans.
